Faces that play every part in my life
Lovers and strangers who dance in my eyes
And maybe they'll stay but it might be goodbye
Who knows what those faces will find?
Wearing expressions like clothes make a skin
Characters looking on out from within
Can touch me so deep through a contact so thin
Those faces are where it begins
Much more than words can ever say they never fail
Telling the tale of the heart
You know the truth if you can look
It's an open book
And every dream they ever keep is written deep
Sometimes they weep at the world
You'll read a life between the lines
Just like yours and mine
Faces have played many parts in my life
Lovers and strangers who danced in my eyes
If everyone is a one-of-a-kind
Who knows what those faces will find?

Sherrie: I let myself go on this one and just wrote
without any thoughts of catchy hooks or commerciality. I was able to
explore some musical ideas and I think I ended up with a piece of music
that would stand up on its own. But Duke's lyrics lifted it into a
different realm altogether. In my opinion these are his Shakespeare
moments.
Duke:
Willy the Pen! Well I do think this one has some real poetry in it. It's
my mum's favourite. It was a great pleasure to write something almost
entirely observational for a change. Writers spend a lot of time watching
people and it is difficult to find a more expressive indicator of the
human condition than to look into someone's face. Notes
from the band: The
backing vocals were thought up spontaneously by John and sung by Sherrie,
John and Duke in three parts straight into a single mic with no overdubs.
We all laughed when we got it right first time, it's quite rare that
something comes off so easily with no preparation! There's also a mad
moment that sounds like the theramin from Star Trek which is actually
Sherrie's voice - she had great fun watching John and Duke double up in the corner
as she pretended to be an opera singer. John's wonderful acoustic guitar
solo is a very special musical moment for all of us.
