Got up this morning
In need of perspective
My depth of perception was getting obscure
So I went to the agent
And got me a key
And what we all need
A room with a view
Spatial awareness
Is so good for you
A Room with a view to live in
A Room with a view
A Room with a view to live in
That's what - we all need one
A Room with a view
A Room with a view
Carpets and curtains
Are internal organs
It's best to ignore them if they're working well
So focus your mind on external dimensions
And did I mention a room with a view?
Hypermetropia
A vista or two
A Room with a view to live in
A Room with a view
A Room with a view to live in
That's what - we all need one
A Room with a view
A Room with a view
Can't wait for Tuesday Property News day
Yeah a Room with a view |

Sherrie: I'd been messing round with these chords that are
dead easy to play but sound a bit weird and give the song a slightly
mad-sounding harmony. This is reinforced by the way the backing vocals are
put together and performed. The guitar riff came well after the song had
been written and sort of evolved from one of the weird chords and
something Duke had written in a previous life. The concept came from when
we were homeless and lived in a hotel which had a wonderful view over the
Severn valley...that view kept us going through some difficult times.
Duke: I wanted to match the mad-sounding harmony with some
wacky imagery. The song contains John's favourite line from the whole
album "carpets and curtains are internal organs, it's best to ignore
them if they're working well". I'm pretty proud of that one! On the
surface the lyric is about going to an estate agent and getting them to
show you a nice place with a brilliant view as something of an escape, but
on a deeper level it's about finding a way of looking outwards and
onwards towards the horizons of your life, rather than being an
introspective bore wallowing in self-pity when things are bad. I like to
get philosophical now and then. The opening line is a musician's joke -
the myth that every blues song starts with 'I woke up this morning' - I
wanted to put a twist into one of the most well-used lyricist's gambits
ever.
